July 4th Ode to America

The teleprompter blinking,
The captain's steady voice,
Walt Whitman's ship was sinking
The crowd was making noise...

"Let no person's sorrow
come from the sea of debt!
We'll reach the end tomorrow
with our goals met!"

"The great Pacific island
awaits us at the end!"
The voices were silent
The people were sad

"And in the sea of sorrow
will go our own way!
Have faith in that tomorrow
Have Hope in Change today!"

And melancholic music
was playing at the mast
The speaker's voice was soothing
while ship was sinking fast

The children were crying,
"The ship will never sink!"
While people were dying
The captain did not blink...

And somewhere in the ocean
above the greenish waves
The lonely mast with flag still stands
The monument to slaves.
